Education at Blackacre

Jefferson County Public School Programs and Camps

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) partners with Blackacre to offer field trips and environmental education programs for students. Learn more about JCPS programs online, or call (502) 485-3437 for additional information, to schedule a JCPS field trip, or to learn about JCPS summer camps.

Blackacre Foundation Education Program

Fridays at Blackacre are reserved for non-JCPS School field trips. The Blackacre Foundation has developed curricular materials to make visits more rewarding for both teachers and students. These materials have been created in cooperation with environmental educators from participating school systems.

The Foundation has an Educational Advisory Committee consisting of current and former educators and collaborates with Jefferson County Public Schools staff. The committee collects and designates appropriate Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) Core Content material to be used in developing the Foundation's Education Program curriculum and Instructors Guide. The Blackacre Foundation Education Program curricula addresses many of the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) core content codes.

Please call the Blackacre Foundation at (502) 266-9802 or email info@blackacrefoundation.org to learn more or to schedule a field trip.

Facilities

A parking lot is located along the gravel land leading to the Homestead. Handicapped parking may be found at the Homestead. Clivus Multrum toilets have been built near the Nature Center, and provide the only restroom facility at Blackacre. The Preserves water supply comes from cisterns; it therefore is advisable to bring bottled water to Blackacre. Students may eat lunch in designated areas of the preserve, but all visitors are expected to remove any refuse they introduce to the grounds. Please bring garbage bags to collect and remove all left over lunch food, wrappings and cans.

Chaperones

Student groups are introduced to sections of the Preserve not known to all visitors. It is important that adult chaperones maintain appropriate behavior and movement within the student groups to ensure the protection of both children and wildlife, with a minimum of one adult per ten students. There is no limit to the number of chaperones you may invite to join the students. Admission is free for students and chaperones.

Animals

Horses and cattle are pastured at Blackacre, and generations of cats have lived and worked in the barn. In addition to these animals, which are tended by Preserve personnel, Blackacre is home to deer and many other wild animals. Students who visit the preserve must understand that these animals are not pets, and must observe them from a respectful distance. Do not enter the barnyard without staff personnel present.

The Homestead

The stone cottage and brick residence are privately occupied and the interiors are not included in school tours. The stone springhouse, brick smokehouse and Appalachian style barn are open for student observations if conducted with adult supervision. Students are asked to remain on the gravel lane as they walk from the Nature Center to the Homestead.

Clothing

A visit to Blackacre is an outdoor experience. Encourage students to wear appropriate clothing, suitable to both the weather and the terrain. Old clothes and sturdy shoes are found on Blackacre's best dressed visitors!

Pre-Visit Activities

Although science and social studies curricula are emphasized at Blackacre, the site offers many opportunities for independent creative problem solving, writing, and arts activities. At the time you schedule your field trip, discuss your field trip goals with Blackacre Foundation personnel, coordinating anticipated arrival and departure times and field trip activities. The Blackacre Foundation telephone number is (502) 266-9802 and the email address is info@blackacrefoundation.org.

Arrival

All buses must park in the designated parking area where staff will meet them. Students will be divided into smaller groups and assigned group leaders at this location. Staff will direct you to the Nature Center where lunch bags and other material may be stored before students begin to explore the Preserve.

Post-Visit Activities

The Blackacre field trip is designed to serve as an extension of classroom activities. While high school post visit activities will be found through the development of specific research projects and curricular enrichment, younger students may convert their Preserve experience to writing, role-playing, and discussion activities.

You will receive an evaluation form following the field trip asking you to advise us of successful field trip components and of areas that require our attention. We will appreciate your feedback.
