The Blackacre Foundation

THE BLACKACRE FOUNDATION

Judge Macauley Smith and Emilie Strong Smith established the Blackacre Foundation in 1983 to manage and maintain the grounds and structures of Blackacre State Nature Preserve. In 1996 and 1997 the Smith family contributed funds to allow the Foundation to purchase 101 protective acres adjacent to the preserve.

It is the mission of the Blackacre Foundation to protect and preserve the natural, historic, and aesthetic character of the land and buildings it manages; to promote local history and environmental education; and to ensure responsible use and enjoyment of this land by the public. To fulfill its mission, the Blackacre Foundation works to:

  • Provide funding to maintain existing structures and land
  • Foster public-private partnerships in environmental education, land management, and land acquisition and conservation easements
  • Provide programs that insure public access
  • Acquire additional property that will support the conservation and aesthetics of the watershed

The Blackacre Foundation manages the state nature preserve in partnership with the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission and Jefferson County Public Schools.
