The Blackacre Foundation offers a variety of programs for the public.

Tree ID Hike:
April 1, 2:00 pm
Ever wondered what species of trees you’re seeing as you walk through the woods? Join naturalist Alan Nations for a walk in the woods to learn how to identify trees using leaves, twigs, bark, and habitat as your guide. This walk is appropriate for all ages. Meet in front of the Visitor’s Center. No Charge.
Second Saturday with the Weed Team:
April 14, May 12, June 9, July 14, and August 11, 9:00 am
Join us as we work around the homestead and on the preserve to remove invasive plants, restore fences, weed gardens and build trails. You’ll have a great time and make a big difference! Meet in front of the Visitor’s Center.
Bluebirds at Blackacre:
April 15, 2:00
Join us in discovering one of Kentucky’s most colorful native birds! Volunteer Larry Calton, who created our trail of blue bird nesting boxes, will show a short information film about the birds and then lead a hike to look at the nesting pairs around the preserve. All ages welcome! This is sure to be a fun day, so bring your family and friends! Meet at the Schick Nature Center. No Charge.
Evening Lecture: “Stories from my days as a Food Critic.”
April 19, 6:00 pm refreshments served, 6:30 lecture begins
Join writer Susan Reigler as she shares some amusing memories of the time she spent as a food critic for the Courier Journal. Her accounts are sure to leave you feeling you’ve gotten an insider’s view into the restaurant world of Louisville. Susan, the author of Kentucky: A Compass American Guide is now writing for the Courier’s Travel section and has been a long-time resident of Blackacre’s Stone Cottage. Meet in the Visitor’s Center. $15 per ticket. Seating is limited, so please call 266-9802 to make your reservation.
Falcons, Hawks and Vultures with Raptor Rehab:

Back by popular demand! Raptor Rehab will be bringing falcons, hawks and vultures, so you can get a chance to see them up close and personal. All ages welcome! Be sure not to miss it! Meet in the Schick Nature Center. No Charge.
Wildflower Talk and Walk:
April 29, 1:00 talk, 2:00 walk
Join us as renowned botanist, Pat Haragan, discusses native plants and exotic pest plants. Then, join naturalist Mike Edelin for a walk through Blackacre’s trails to see our native wildflower collection. Plus, you’ll get a behind the scenes look at our fields that have been planted with native warm season grasses and wildflowers to improve habitat. Meet in the Visitor’s Center. No Charge.
Volunteer Training:
April 29, 2:00
Join volunteer and board chair Gwynne Potts for an afternoon learning about Blackacre and the important role of our volunteer docents. We invite you to become a part of this wonderful group of volunteers who open the Presley Tyler Visitor’s Center on Sundays from 1-5. Docents greet visitors from all over the globe and provide information about Blackacre’s past, the historic buildings, the nature preserve, trails, programs, and more. Meet in the Visitor’s Center. No Charge.
Blackacre Crafters:
May 6, 13, 20, 2 pm
Learn to knit or bring your own projects. Quilting, knitting, cross stitch, needlepoint and all other hand-sewing projects are welcome. If you want to learn to knit, bring some chunky yarn and large needles and knitting instructor Susan Moss will get you started. Join the fun! All ages and abilities welcome! Meet in the Visitor’s Center. No Charge.
Birding at Blackacre:
May 6, 8:30 am
Eddie Huber of the Beckham Bird Club will lead a bird-watching hike at Blackacre. Beginners and
experienced birders are welcome to come and see how many of the forty-six species of birds that have been identified here will reveal themselves. Bring binoculars, hiking shoes, and a desire to
learn about birds. Meet in front of the Visitor’s Center. No Charge.
Caring for Horses 101:
May 6 and June 24, 2 pm
Learn what it takes to care for a horse and practice some grooming techniques like currying and brushing on one of Blackacre’s gentle mares. You’ll also get to watch as a Blacksmith gives Babe and Roxanne (our four-legged friends) new shoes. All ages welcome! Meet at the barn. No Charge.
Music at the Farmhouse:
May 27, 1:30-3:30 pm
Enjoy … as Donna and Wes Griffin play their….. We invite you to listen and ask questions about the music and the instruments. In front of the Visitor’s Center. No Charge.
Blackacre Open House Event
June 3, 1-5 pm, 3:00 BBQ
Drop by and share in the fun and excitement of our first annual open house! Volunteers will be on hand to lead tours through the homestead and the nature preserve. Bring your children to enjoy horse and buggy rides or a climb up in the hayloft of our barn! Refreshments will be served throughout the afternoon and the barbeque will fire up around 3:00. Meet in the Visitor’s Center. No Charge.
Sunset Hike:
June 10, 7:30 pm
Several years ago, the Blackacre Foundation developed a new trail in our southern forest with the help of the Southern Indiana Hiking Club. This trail, called Tyler’s Trace, is a one-mile loop that winds through hardwood forests, past the old juniper-lined road that ran from Taylorsville Road to the Blackacre farmhouse. Volunteer Hal Taylor will take you on a tour of Tyler’s Trace as well as other Blackacre trails for this sunset hike. (Trails are easy to moderately difficult.) Meet in front of the Visitor’s Center. No Charge.
Bluegrass at Blackacre: Tommy Brown and the County Line Grass
June 30, 6 pm
Bring your family for singin’, dancin’, strummin’, pluckin’, and pickin’ in the courtyard of the 1844 Presley Tyler Farmhouse. Our third annual “Bluegrass at Blackacre” event will provide great music in a beautiful setting. We invite you to come early to enjoy a hike through the preserve, a stroll through the homestead, or a horse and buggy ride. Then spread out a blanket beneath the shade and bring a picnic dinner. Meet in the Presley Tyler Visitor’s Center Courtyard. $10 for adults, $3 for children under 12 years, $8 for Blackacre Foundation members.
