Volunteer at Blackacre! Our energetic and talented volunteers help in all aspects of our work and make it possible for us to do much more than we otherwise could. The Blackacre Foundation works to preserve and share Blackacre's natural legacy and early settlement history by maintaining and interpreting the Nature Preserve and Historic Homestead for the community. Volunteer at Blackacre and you can
We rely on volunteers to help manage the preserve and to keep the Presley Tyler Visitor’s Center open to the public. Volunteer opportunities include being a Sunday afternoon docent, joining our Weed Team on Wednesday mornings and on the second Saturday of each month, working on carpentry projects, helping out in the office with administrative responsibilities, and helping with public programming. Volunteer Opportunities:Visitor’s Center Docent Greet and talk informally with visitors from all over the globe and provide information about Blackacre’s past, the historic buildings, the nature preserve, trails, programs, and more. Enjoy your “office” within the Presley Tyler Farmhouse built in 1844. Volunteers need to be friendly, outgoing, and eager to learn about Blackacre. Docents are needed to open the Presley Tyler Visitor’s Center to visitors on Sunday afternoons from 1-5 during Blackacre’s visitor season (September through November, April through June). We invite you attend an orientation session on April 29th and learn more about Blackacre from one of our current docents. Weed Team Volunteers If you love working outside and want to make a difference in either the garden or on the nature preserve, this is the group for you! The Weed Team works around the nature preserve to remove invasive plants, clear fallen trees, improve trails, and eliminate barbed-wire fencing. Additionally, our garden crew plants and maintains the gardens at Blackacre. Together, this group of volunteers has made great strides in helping to restore and enhance the preserve and the landscape around the homestead. People, plants and animals can thank this crew for enriching Blackacre’s habitat, re-establishing scenic vistas, and providing beautiful gardens. Weed Team volunteers work every Wednesday morning from 9 to noon, and on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, also from 9 to noon. We’re also happy to schedule an additional work day to meet the needs of your group. Weed Team volunteers should wear work clothes and gardening gloves. Blackacre Carpenters Volunteers with knowledge of carpentry are needed to assist in the maintenance and repair of Blackacre’s structures, historic and modern. Volunteers also assist in the construction of signs and wooden fences. Some carpentry tools are available; volunteers may be requested to bring their own tools for some projects, depending upon availability. Currently there is not a set schedule for carpentry volunteers. Call 266-9802 to find out what projects are available and schedule a time come out and help. Office Assistance Blackacre is a busy place, with a number of ongoing programs and a slate of new programs to be introduced.
